Graham thought he might be getting the hang of this vampire stuff. Though it had been morning when their train pulled in—and blinding bright with it—he’d made it from the railway station to the hotel under his own steam.
True, the Hotel Schweizerhof was only across the street, and, yes, as soon as he’d reached the room he and Ben were sharing, he’d toppled like a tree. He’d remembered doing it, however, remembered the sparkling, snow-clad city and the broad avenue, remembered the Schweizerhof’s neoclas sic marble facade and Sally’s coos of interest at the nearby luxury shops.
So what if he’d woken again at sunset to discover he’d toppled to the floor rather than the bed? Progress wasn’t the sort of thing a person ought to cavil at. He didn’t have a crick at least, and he wasn’t burned. Someone had been kind enough to tuck a pillow under his head and pull a blanket over him.
Graham found himself hoping the someone wasn’t either Estelle or Pen.
There was no way of telling, because he’d returned to consciousness in an empty room. Ben had scribbled a note (which Graham didn’t have to turn on the light to read) letting Graham know where he and the others had gone to eat.
The reminder of dinner, and the difference in what that now meant for him, darkened Graham’s mood. In a million ways, large and small, he had set himself apart from those he loved.
“Tough,” he said aloud to the gloomy silk-papered walls.
He flicked the lights on defiantly. He would do as Robin advised. He’d keep up his human habits. He’d cling to his human heart. No matter what, he didn’t have to lose everything he was.
The room’s telephone was a luxury Graham was grateful for. He used it now to have the switchboard dial London. When Robin answered, the older vampire sounded much more alert than Graham. Using oblique language, in case the hotel operators were nosy, Graham informed him they had arrived and asked if there’d been news about Edmund. Robin confessed there had not. Edmund’s captors weren’t showing up in the sights of any of MI5’s intelligence networks—including the exotic ones. He tried to soothe Graham by reassuring him there wasn’t bad news, but this seemed stingy comfort to him.
He rung off no happier than when he’d lifted the receiver.
It seemed his only recourse was to wait for Estelle to have another of her dreams. Restless, he rose from the spindly French-style desk he’d sat at to make his call. The curtained window was a single stride away. Their rooms were on the hotel’s north side, overlooking the Bahnhofstrasse and, farther on, the frozen Limmat River’s quay. Graham had always had sharp eyes, probably thanks to growing up absorbing Edmund’s energy. Even so, he’d never seen anything like the scene that spread before him when he pulled aside the draperies.
Most of Zurich’s residents rode the trams, but a few long cars passed slowly along the streets, their headlights sweeping the lower levels
